Series and episode overview by Tricia Helfer Fan:
Lie to Me is FOX’s critically acclaimed psychological drama about genius psychologist Dr. Cal Lightman and his team of behavioral analysts, who are frequently called to assist in various third party (often local and federal law enforcement) investigations. Their method of investigation is interpreting microexpressions and body language to establish whether a person is telling the truth or e.g. hiding something.
In episode “Double Blind”, Lightman (Roth) & co. are employed to investigate an attempted robbery on the Parker Museum, where two particularly precious items are currently on display. Anticipating a second robbery attempt, Lightman’s team begins to investigate which item the robbers are after and why, while Lightman follows the trail of the failed first robbery to a local hospital, where he makes the acquaintance of the mysterious and beautiful Naomi. The two soon become involved when Naomi pleads for Lightman’s protection against her violent ex-boyfriend, but as it soon turns out that Naomi may not be who she says she is, she and Lightman begin to play each other for their own purposes. But how far do Naomi and Cal really have each other figured?
* * * *
Tricia Helfer portrays Naomi Russell, a captivating and mysterious woman who catches Dr. Cal Lightman’s eye on first sight. Although Naomi continues to successfully evade Lightman’s probing as to her true person and motives, their instant chemistry sets them off on a brief but intensive affair. But when Cal continues to find it difficult to read Naomi’s expressions, the question remains whether she really is a vulnerable woman on the run from a violent ex-boyfriend, or an exceptional con artist.
[Lightman: "Is that man bothering you?"]
“Which man?”
[Lightman: "Well, the one that was staring at you."]
“You mean, you.”
[Lightman: "Oh, so you were ignoring me then."]
“Are you hitting on me?”
[Lightman: "What, in this place? Be a bit creepy, wouldn't it?"]
[Lightman: "For the record, this isn't how we first met. If anyone asks, we met online."]
“As someone’s feeling better, can I ask how close a relative that was?”
[Lightman: "Well… depends what you mean by 'close'."]
“Is it possible just a little bit that you’re playing the creep card with me?”
[Lightman: "I resent that. Is it working?"]
“You’re divorced, you have a teenage daughter, and you cook.”
[Lightman: "Well, call me Mr. Right. But enough about me. What would I have found if you'd invited me up to your place?"]
“Aside from the bad housekeeping I’m about as vanilla as they come.”
“Want a bite?”
[Lightman: "That's the third time you've offered."]
“Maybe I wasn’t talking about food.”
“You know, this is kind of a drag, I can’t seem to hide anything from you.”
“This is like a therapy session in the middle of a police interrogation.”
[Lightman: "That's my idea of foreplay."]
“Don’t call it foreplay if you don’t mean it.”
[Lightman: "I know you're happy."]
“Can we call it relieved?”
[Lightman: "Do you know much about Egyptian art then?"]
“I know when something’s beautiful.”
[Lightman: "And pricey."]
“Beauty and cost don’t always go hand in hand.”
“You know, most artists will tell you that starving’s overrated.”
“That’s just a rock.”
“You know, I’ll go nab those drinks.”
[Lightman: "Amongst other things."]
“You mean you want a sausage on a stick as well?”
“You’re staring.”
[Lightman: "It's just that I don't want to let you out of my sight, darling."]
“I like that. But if this is gonna work out, we have to allow each other some alone time.”
[Lightman: "No, we both know this isn't gonna work out, love."]
“Well then, before our romance ends, can you grab us another glass of champagne?”
“If I didn’t know better I’d say you’re surprised to see me.”
“Guess what’s in my purse. It’s not green and it’s not a rock.”
[Lightman: "Tell me it's not about money."]
“This isn’t about money.”
[Lightman: "Can you tell me that again?"]
“Why?”
[Lightman: "Coz with your face it's hard for me to do what I normally do."]
“This isn’t about money.”
“I never lied to you. Technically speaking.”
“Maybe I wanted to play with the world’s greatest deception expert.”

Co-star Tim Roth (“Dr. Cal Lightman”) on working with Tricia:
“We did a really interesting and fun Thomas Crown Affair thing with Tricia Helfer, which I really enjoyed. She was a complete surprise to me. I didn’t know who she was because I don’t watch television very much. But she was terrific.”

Personal Thoughts
Sandra: Lie to Me isn’t really a show I’ve watched a lot before, because it simply isn’t my kind of show, despite its charismatic lead actor. For me, the series just falls under shows like The Mentalist and the later seasons of House M.D., neither of which have been able to convince me that they are as smart as advertised. That said, when Tricia’s appearance on the show was announced in September 2010, I was nevertheless pretty excited, because it was likely to translate to a character, a one-off though it would be, that would not be as paper thin as some of Tricia’s earlier guest roles. Delightfully, the show didn’t disappoint.
As Naomi in episode “Double Blind”, Tricia is nothing short of terrific. The character definitely plays on Tricia’s strength’s as an actress (that is, portraying the openly confident and flirtatious woman), but at the same time also shows her, if only momentarily, in a new kind of position as vulnerable, which was a nice touch. Especially as characters go, to me Tricia’s brief stint on Lie to Me marks her most fruitful TV guest appearance to date.
