Series and episode overview by Tricia Helfer Fan:
The Whole Truth is ABC’s short-lived legal dramedy chronicling legal cases in New York City from the perspectives of both the prosecution and the defense.
In episode “Liars”, when a dentist is found dead in his office, defense attorney Jimmy Brogan (Morrow) is hired to represent the prime suspect, his wife, with whom the man was going through a difficult divorce. At the arraignment, however, things take a whole new turn when a certain Bitsie Katz appears, claiming to be the man’s fiancée and causing a scene, and before long the entire scope of his (many) affairs is revealed. Although the evidence against the wife is compelling, at the same time as DA Peale (Tierney) vehemently seeks to indict her, certain obscurities in the case make Brogan doubt her guilt, and when everyone’s a liar the killer could be anyone.

Tricia Helfer portrays Beatrice “Bitsie” Katz, the victim’s ditzy would-be trophy wife, who however turns out to be not quite who she says she is. As the court case against the victim’s wife progresses, Bitsie unexpectedly falters in her testimony against the wife and is revealed to be a pathological liar and a stalker, both her professed engagement being false and her actually being one of the few women in the dentist’s acquaintance whom he didn’t have an intimate relationship with.
“Murderer! You killed my Charles!”
“Look, I just came here because the police said it might help convict that monster wife of his. I’m not really comfortable talking about my private life.”
[eyeing Edge] “Who’s that?”
[Edge: "I am sorry for your loss."]
“And I’m sorry for my ‘outburst’ at the arraignment. It’s just… See, Charles and I met at the Red Cross. I was planning a charity gala and he was organizing one of his humanitarian trips. To Haiti, free dental work.”
[Edge: "Oh."]
“If there’s anything I can do to help, anything you want to know…”
[Lena: "Getting proposed to on your birthday, Ms. Katz. That must've been a wonderful surprise."]
“I called my parents right after. They sang me ‘Happy Birthday’ and I told them the news.”
[Lena: "That was May 11th?"]
[Bitsie nods]
[Lena: "Would it surprise you to know that Charles Concolino was at a dental convention in Omaha with another girlfriend on May 11th?"]
“Well, that can’t be right.”
[Lena: "Charles Concolino's hotel reservation and a sworn statement."]
“Well, maybe it wasn’t exactly my birthday, but he did get me this ring.”
[Lena: "From Tiffany's, you said?"]
“Yes.”
[Lena: "May I?... That's a pretty old-fashioned setting. If we take this ring to Tiffany's, will they verify that they sold it this year?"]
“I don’t know, I think so.”
[Lena: "Ms. Katz. Doctor Concolino's records show that you made 14 appointments with him in the last year. But unlike his girlfriends', your dental appointments were actually just dental appointments, weren't they?"]
“No. You have that wrong. I saw Charles all the time.”
[Lena: "But not for sex. For root canals."]
“We were getting to know each other!”
[Lena: "You weren't his mistress, were you? You were his stalker. Everything you testified to here today was a lie, wasn't it?"]
“No, it wasn’t a lie! We were meant to be together, he just hadn’t realized it yet!”

Personal Thoughts
Sandra: I have to say I think it’s a real shame The Whole Truth got cancelled by ABC before even half the season had aired. So the ratings were bad; a lot of terrific shows have started off poorly, and even networks such as FOX and TNT have given poorly rated shows at least the chance of a full season before announcing their fate. Even though the writing could definitely be a lot sharper, The Whole Truth has a great cast and concept and I’m confident the show would’ve evolved into something really good had it only been given the opportunity to do so. Tierney is particularly good in her role as DA Kathryn Peale, and there really hasn’t been any good legal shows on TV since The Practice (1997-2004) and Boston Legal (2004-08), so there definitely would’ve been an open spot for another.
In episode “Liars”, Tricia Helfer has a small but fun role as the ditzy Bitsie, and it was really great to see her do something entirely different for a change, and do a terrific job of it, too. Definitely worth a watch all around, and especially if you want to see something new!
